Captain Slater was a devoted advocate for Public Education, knowing that this was the real and most effective way for a firefighter to protect the citizens - Help them to help themselves! His selfless dedication to Public Education and injury prevention was duly noted by the Washington State Fire Marshal's Office as he was selected as the "Firefighter Above and Beyond the Call of Duty" in 2000. He continued his efforts even after he retired and while he battled a disease that finally took his life.

With a heavy heart Local 864 is sad to inform its members and members of the IAFF of the passing of Fire Fighter Josh Baker. Josh was tragically killed in a Single vehicle motor vehicle accident on November 14, 2010 outside of Issaquah. Josh was an avid fisherman and routinely traveled to Alaska to seek out the real fish. Josh was assigned to Engine 13/B-Shift and had been a professional Fire Fighter since April of 2007. Josh is survived by his wife and their two children, a son, 3, and a daughter, 11 months.

Jefferson County Fire Protection District #1 formed after the Chimacum School burnt down in 1948. It was then that a community committee gathered to create a firefighting system, Aileen McDaniel was a part of that committee. Mrs. McDaniel became part of the administrative solutions to for a new fire district and helped build the new fire station. In 1954, Mrs. McDaniel was hired by the newly formed Jefferson County Fire Protection District #1 as the fire District Secretary. Mrs. McDaniel was the catalyst for implementing programs which provided a retirement program for the volunteers. She maintained the budget, interacted with State of Washington counterparts, paid the bills, and answered all correspondence. She was the link between the firefighters, Jefferson County, and the State of Washington in the early days of forming the district. As a result, she was sought out by other new districts to provide advice in how to get started. In her spare time, she was often found at the fire station making sure the commissioners' room was ready for the monthly meetings. She was the focal point for contacting truck dealers to buy the first trucks and for making sure that specifications were clear and concise. She was at the center of discussions on the district annexation of Marrowstone Island and in crafting mutual aid agreements with surrounding districts. In her spare time she volunteered countless hours to the Firemen’s Helpers and served at many pancake breakfasts and coordinated many rummage sales to support the volunteers. After her resignation from the district secretary job in 1986, and more than 26 years of official service, she continued to volunteer her hours and abilities to serve the firefighters. The jacket that read “Jefferson County Fire Protection District No 1” remained one of her most treasured possessions up until her death on February 25, 2011. She would have been very proud to have seen one of the first trucks, still painted with “Jefferson County Fire District #1” on the side, parked at the church and the cemetery in her honor on the day of her funeral.

A celebration of life is scheduled for April 13, 2 p.m., at Northpoint Church for Thomas J. Huddleston, retired deputy chief of the Poulsbo Fire Department. Huddleston died March 22 after a long illness. He was 69. Huddleston was born in Ashland, Ky., on March 5, 1943 and grew up in Lexington. After graduating from Lafayette High School, he joined the Air Force and honorably served his country both stateside and with a tour in Vietnam. At the age of 25, he joined the Las Vegas Fire Department where he spent the next nine years working his way through the ranks with a definitive interest in fire prevention. His experience included managing and leading the bomb search and disposal squad for all of Clark County, including Las Vegas. In 1977, Huddleston was appointed Nevada state fire marshal; with his leadership and mastery of the written word, the first statewide fire and building codes were written, adopted, implemented and enforced. He also wrote the bill draft for the Nevada Retrofit Law subsequent to the MGM and Hilton Hotel fires. In addition to his responsibilities as state fire marshal, Huddleston served on the Western Fire Chiefs Association Uniform Fire Code Committee as a member and chairman, providing testimony concerning fire prevention and the Uniform Fire Code process before state and local officials as well as the U.S. Congress. After serving 10 years as Nevada state fire marshal, Huddleston accepted a position as the fire marshal for the City of Corona, Calif., from where he retired “the first time” in 1993. According to the Poulsbo Fire Department, he joined the local department in 1994 as fire marshal and was promoted to deputy chief in 2005. It was from Poulsbo Fire Department that Chief Huddleston retired for the last time in 2010, where he is still sorely missed. He is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy; son, Shawn Huddleston; and daughter, Jennifer Sommer (Megan and Madison). Northpoint Church is located at 1779 NE Hostmark St., in Poulsbo. An online memorial can be seen at www.poulsbomortuary.com. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to the COPD Foundation, www.copdfoundation.org. Protocol for uniformed personnel is Class “A” uniform with shrouded badge on the day of the service.
